Water Eject plays a low, hand-tuned tone that vibrates your speaker membrane and drives water droplets out of the speaker cavity. It is the same trick your Apple Watch uses.
How to use it
- Turn the volume all the way up.
- Point the speaker downwards, so gravity helps.
- Tap the droplet to start, and let the tone play for 10–20 seconds.
- Tap again to stop, wipe the speaker, and repeat until your audio sounds clear.
Getting the best result
- Take the case off first, because a case can trap water right against the speaker grille.
- Dry the outside of the device with a soft, lint-free cloth before you start.
- Two or three rounds usually work better than one long one.
- Keep the speaker pointing down for a minute afterwards so loosened droplets can run out.
The frequency dial
The app starts at 165 Hz, the frequency Apple uses to eject water on Apple Watch, and that is the right choice for almost everyone. Drag up or down on the droplet to change it: the dial is precise to the hertz at the low end and moves in octaves as you climb towards the ultrasonic top of its range.
With VoiceOver, the droplet is an adjustable control, so swipe up or down to step through frequencies. On a device with a keyboard, the arrow keys do the same.
Starting and stopping from elsewhere
While the tone plays, a Live Activity appears on your Lock Screen showing the frequency, with a stop button. You can also add the Water Eject toggle to Control Center or the Lock Screen to start and stop the tone without opening the app.
Common questions
Is this safe for my speaker?
Yes. The app plays an ordinary audio tone at a level your speaker is built to handle. It is the same principle behind the Water Lock eject on Apple Watch. It does not overdrive the hardware.
I don't see any water coming out.
That is normal. The droplets are tiny and often evaporate as they are pushed out. Judge the result by ear: run the tone, then play some music or a voice memo and listen for whether the muffled, crackly quality is gone.
My speaker still sounds muffled after several rounds.
Stop and let the device air-dry at room temperature for a few hours, then try again. Do not use rice, an external heat source, or compressed air. Apple advises against all three. If the sound stays muffled after a day, contact Apple Support, because that suggests water further inside the device.
There is no sound at all.
Turn the volume up with the hardware buttons, and check that no other app has taken over audio playback. The tone plays through the ringer/silent switch, so a silenced device is not the cause. If your device is connected to AirPods, headphones, or a speaker over Bluetooth, disconnect them first, otherwise the tone plays there instead of through the built-in speaker.
Does it work on iPad?
Yes, the same way. Point the speaker you want to clear downwards.
Does the app need an internet connection?
No. Water Eject works fully offline and never sends anything anywhere. See the privacy policy.
Which devices are supported?
iPhone and iPad running iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 and later.
Please note
Water Eject helps clear water from the speaker cavity. It cannot undo water damage and is not a substitute for professional repair. Do not charge a device that is still wet, and if iOS warns you that liquid has been detected in the connector, follow the instructions it gives you.
